VIRTUAL LEARNING
PARENT PLAYBOOK

City View Charter will start the 2020-2021 school year virtually in response to the pandemic and the escalation of transmission rates in Washington County. This option allows City View to prioritize the health and safety of students, teachers, and staff while creating opportunities to accelerate learning in the virtual space for all students. Our experience with remote learning in the spring and the school-wide survey highlighted a wide variety of opinions and needs for our students and their families. 

There are important distinctions between the remote learning that occurred in the spring and the virtual learning that is occurring at the start of this year. In the spring, teachers were not expected to prepare and design any standardized teaching materials nor were they required to provide synchronized learning opportunities. Similarly, teachers did not deliver online teaching that required grades or attendance. In contrast, in the fall, there will be graded assignments, attendance expectations, synchronous instruction, and timely feedback from teachers during virtual learning.

This Virtual Learning Playbook is intended to provide information to parents regarding how school will operate during the 2020-2021 school year. Based on evolving health and safety guidelines and the needs of students and families, City View will share updates as they become available. 

Thank you for partnering with MNPS as we strive to provide high-quality, equitable educational opportunities for all students in the virtual environment. We could not do this without your trust and support. We will get through this together! 

City View Priorities

To ensure equity of access to virtual learning, City View will:

  • use a standards-based online curriculum across the district for all grade bands;

  • provide devices, instructional materials, and wi-fi hotspots for students;

  • provide training for teachers and staff to equip them with tools to successfully support virtual teaching and learning (technology, online platforms, virtual engagement, etc.); and

  • provide families with technology training and support.

Additionally, City View  prioritizes the SEL needs of students and seeks opportunities to connect with families in new, innovative ways. Therefore, City View will:

  • schedule weekly touchpoints for students and families to monitor student health and wellness and to stay apprised of family needs;

  • schedule regular community meetings and gatherings to create virtual communities that can sustain accelerated learning; and

  • provide all students with access to nutritious meals.
